Augusta Fashion Police Put Jason Day On Notice After Last Year's "Parachute Pants" Saga
When Golf Attire Makes More Headlines Than Golf Shots
If you were hoping for another year of Jason Day turning Augusta National into a runway show, prepare to be disappointed. The Australian golfer has revealed that Masters officials are keeping a watchful eye on his wardrobe choices this time around.
One year after his loud Malbon outfits sparked headlines and set social media ablaze, Day spilled the tea during a recent appearance on the "Dan on Golf" show that Augusta National brass have requested advance approval of his tournament attire.
"If they would have let us do what we first put the scripting through to them, it would have been a lot crazier than last year, but, you know it'll be toned down," Day explained. "They asked to see the scripting before."
From Silent Approval to Fashion Oversight
The 37-year-old Aussie seemed almost amused by the sudden attention to his clothing choices.
"See, the funny thing was that they never asked to see scripting of mine because I've always been pretty neutral and down the middle, and this year they asked because obviously what happened last year."
That "what happened" was nothing short of a fashion firestorm. Day's navy blue slacks during the opening round of the 2024 Masters were widely mocked as "parachute pants," while his bold sweater vest on day two had golf traditionalists clutching their pearls.
Social Media Had a Field Day
The internet wasn't kind to Day's bold fashion choices. Barstool Sports' Dan "Big Cat" Katz even posted on X: "Is someone making Jason Day dress like this? I feel like he's being pranked."
The clothing controversy eventually reached a tipping point when Day was instructed to remove the attention-grabbing sweater. Ever the professional, Day complied without complaint.
"Respectfully, you do that because it's all about the tournament here, and I understand that. I respect the tournament. That's what we're here to do is try and win the green jacket," he told reporters at the time.
What's in Store for 2025?
Leading up to this year's tournament, Day has shared his updated clothing strategy with a hint of resignation.
"So we have to get clearance on the scripting this year. To Malbon's credit, they've got some bold stuff, but I'm not sure if it'll pass," he said. "So we'll see how it goes. Hopefully [Augusta National] will say yes, if not, then we'll be going back to the drawing board."
Fans got their first glimpse of the new, Augusta-approved Day look during Monday's practice round: light green slacks paired with a simple white polo featuring a red "M" embroidered on the front pocket.
A far cry from last year's fashion headlines, but the 13-time PGA Tour winner surely hopes his golf game—not his outfit—will be the talk of the tournament this time around.
